the pressure is mounting. bill o'reilly tried to tell republicans to calm down about the debate. that they're expecting way too much of mitt romney. but this being bill o'reilly, he ended up putting even more pressure on romney. >> i think the expectations for the debate are too high. particularly conservative republican americans are expecting mitt romney to go out there and do something and i don't know whether that as even possible right now. the first debate means everything. the whole world is watching this thing. this is a big, big debate on wednesday night. this is much bigger than the mccain-obama debate. >> today mitt romney traveled from boston to colorado where the debate will be held as a major player in romney's fund raiser confirmed to fox business that a few new york donors have backed away from financial commitments to the romney campaign and instead said they will spend their money to help the republicans hold on to the house of represents and pick up seats in the senate. the debates will be very important, said one person with knowledge of the matter. if romney does well,

mitt romney is down a point or two. i think the debate wednesday night is crucial. how these events unfold is going to be important. >> i agree he's down a point or two. rasmussen has him down by three, which is unusual. two other factors come in to play. one is the higher level of enthusiasm among republicans, 16 points higher. secondly, the undecided vote tending to go against the incumbent. so i believe that romney can come back. i think he will. i think a lot depends on the debate wednesday night. the debate is stacked to play in romney's favor. the things romney is accusing obama of owe mismanaging the economy, fast and furious, this banghazi stuff -, that can't be rebutted. what obama is accusing romney of, being a tax cheat, swiss bank accounts, all that kind of stuff, can be rebutted. >> sean: what obama will say -- thus this will be mostly on the economy. obama will say, it's getting better. that was the recovery summer of 2010. >> but romney -- there were a whole lot of people right now who want to vote for romney. want to vote against obama. but they don't want to vote fo

post." the latest poll shows among likely voters the president leads 49% to 46% for romney. that's down net two points from two weeks ago when the president was up by five. to what to you attribute the movement, chuck todd? >> well, first of all, the more important number has always been the president sitting at 49% or 50%. i would go through his job approval rating at 49%, his ballot test at 49%, those converge, and that's what matters and 49% puts you in the, quote, re-elect zone. what's affecting romney, this is something we've been watching there is an enthusiasm gap among core republican voters among core democratic groups. overall there's a ten-point advantage among those republicans who call themselves nines or tens when on a scale of one to ten asked how interested they are in this election. there's been a ten-point gap pretty consistent all year. that's why for instance on the registered voter number, the president has a seven-point lead and it shrinks more than in half down to three, because the republican vote is more enthusiastic and they get through our likely voter screens

on the campaign trail as president obama and mitt romney hunkers down and prepares for wednesday's debate. a new abc news/"washington post" poll shows a very tight race. so both campaigns see tomorrow night as a big opportunity. this presidential campaign has been going on for nearly two years and finally it's debate season for the nominees. the time when americans seem to really start paying attention. president obama's rehearsing with senator john kerry and mitt romney is squaring off against senator rob portman. both candidates have challenges and checklists. president obama's working on shorter answers, trying to avoid sounding like the professor he was before the white house. democrats say he needs to look strong and forceful and not appear irritated or impatient. >> they're trying to get him into the mode of being able to answer questions, short, concisely, and to the point, and so it's much more like his mannerisms and his style and the way he comes across as opposed to information in this. >> reporter: and mitt romney? he has to seem relatable, especially after his 47% comment. how can h

challenger by eight points. as mitt romney's, shall we say, second place standing starts to look like more and more of a permanent residence as it seems like a long shot for winning the presidency, the down ticket effect of that is starting to become a bigger part of the conversation. you saw a manifestation of that last week on this show when nancy pelosi came on this show and said, essentially, democrats can win back the house. nancy pelosi said not only is she confident that democrats can get the 25 seats they need to take back control of the house, which is a huge number, she says she, quote, liked to have 35 seats, which would be a lot. and while it is news worthy that the democrats think they can take back the house, it should be said that a number of other observers looking at the same prospect are calling the idea that the democrats could take back the house pretty much impossible. politico publishing a piece on it. one of the consequences of republicans winning so many seats in the state legislatures in the big election of 2010 is that because that was a census year, that was also

on people like mitt romney to help pay down some of that debt. >> reporter: we just put of that graphic there showing the $16 trillion of debt and there are so many digits it almost doesn't fit on the tv screen across the screen there, as you can see. but haven't americans in some way become number to astronomical numbers? how serious is this in. >> they have become number. is it the new normal this massive spilling of red ink but it raises three problems which i don't think the nation has got even to grips with yet. number one our economy is smaller than our debt. we look like europe, we know what happened there. number two we are spending $9 billion every week just paying interest on this debt, about a quarter of it goes overseas. and number 3, we are paying for this debt by printing money. so here is the question, allison, what happens when we stop printing as we inevitably will at some point, what happens when people stop lending us the money because we've borrowed so much. what happens when the markets say you can't afford this. no mas, no more lending? at that point the bubble bur
